About the ISTE Authors!

Karalee Wong Nakatsuka

Gilder Lehrman 2019 California History Teacher of the Year, has taught middle school US History students since 1990. She is passionate about using technology to engage students, building community in her classroom, and helping students see themselves in the story of America as they develop into empathetic and informed critical thinkers and citizens who make a difference in the world. She presents at conferences, webinars, spoken on podcasts, and was honored to be featured in Time Magazine and The New York Times. She is the co-author of Bring History and Civics to Life: Lessons and Strategies to Cultivate Informed, Empathetic Citizens, published by ISTE.

Michele Haiken, Ed.D.

Michele is a veteran educator with more than 25 years of teaching experience. She currently teaches middle school English in New York and serves as an adjunct professor in the education department at Manhattanville College. Michele is the author of Personalized Reading, Second Edition (co-published with NCTE and ISTE, 2024), co-author of Creative SEL with Mark Gura (ISTE, 2023), and author of New Realms for Writing (ISTE, 2019). She also edited Gamify Literacy (ISTE, 2017). An active voice in the education community, Michele has presented at national conferences, led webinars, contributed guest blog posts, and appeared on educational podcasts, sharing her expertise on literacy, gaming, and educational technology.

James Fester

James is an educator, author, and advocate for experiential learning with 20+ years of experience in public, private, and online education. He currently works in support of teachers and schools looking to create engaging, learner-centered programs, and collaborates with informal educational organizations to reimagine their educational programs. A national park volunteer, James supports parks and museums nationwide in reimagining their educational offerings. His writing, featured in many blogs and books published by ISTE, highlights public lands as a teacher resource. He lives in the Twin Cities of Minnesota.

Stephanie Argy

Stephanie edits books for ISTE+ASCD, including The National Park Classroom (James Fester), Creative SEL (Michele Haiken), and Bring History and Civics to Life (Karalee Wong Nakatsuka). She lives in Paris, France.
