Portland Head Light was commissioned by George Washington in 1790. It was first lit on January 10, 1791. It is the oldest lighthouse in Maine.
From the Portland Head Light, you are able to see Ram Island Ledge Light. It was built in 1905 to help those entering Portland Harbor avoid the underwater ledges. Do you know how many lighthouses are built along Maine's rocky coast?
