The monument was built in 1848, founded by Robert Mils and completed by Thomas Casey. the monument was built in two phases and took 30 years to complete.
At 555 feet the Washington monument was the tallest building in Washington when it was first built. The monument is at the center of Washington in between the capital and Lincoln memorial.
