A view of the blueprints of what the Colosseum would look like (1/4 cut to show interior).
The purpose of the Colosseum was to provide entertainment to the citizens of Rome by being a space where gladiators fight to the death. It was considered a sport, and the gladiators were sometimes challenged by animals. It was one of the first buildings to use modern architecture.
Construction of the Colosseum started in 70 AD and took about 10 years to complete (finished in 80 AD). It had a height of 157 feet and a perimeter of 1,788 feet. The project was overseen by Roman Emperor Vespasian and was completed under the rule of his son Titus.
