Solar system planets
Mecury is the planet that orbits closest to the sun, it orbits the sun every 88 days and is 58 000 000km from the sun. Mercury is a terrestrial rock like earth, because it is so close to the sun it has no gases because they are burned. It has an orbit speed of 48km/s. and has a diameter of 4900km.
Saturn is well known for its large rings around it. People say that the rings were formed from parts of a near moon that may have broken down. It takes 354 months for saturn to orbit the sun at the speed of 9.6km per second. Saturn is approximately 1 427 000 000km from the Sun. The weight of saturn is 6 x 10 26kg.
Unlike any other planet uranus rotates on an axis on its side. Its diameter is 50 00 500km. Uranus is 2 781 000 000km from the sun. It takes 1008 months to orbit the sun at the speed of 7 km per second.
Venus is the second closest planet to the sun, it is the brightest object in the night sky. Venus has the hottest surface (500ºC). The average distance of Venus to the sun is 108 000 000 and it's diameter is 12 000km. Venus' average orbit speed is 35km.
Earth's surface is constantly changing, it is the only planet with liquid water discovered on it. Earth' s diameter is 12 800km, the terrestrial planet is 150 000 000 kilometres from the sun. It takes 12 months to orbit the sun at an orbit speed of 30km/s.
Jupiter is a huge planet made of gas. Jupiter has a significant red spot on its surface which is thought to be a giant storm in Jupiter's atmosphere. Jupiters surface is so cold that hydrogen exists as a liquid form. It has a diameter of 143 000km and a mass of 2 x 10 27 kg. The distance from jupiter to the sun is 778 000 000km. It takes 142 months to orbit earth at a speed of 13 km per second.
Mars is smaller than earth, it has a diameter of 6800km. Mars' average distance from the sun is 228 000 000km from the sun and orbits the sun every 22.5 months at an orbit speed of 24km/s.
Pluto is a dwarf planet in the Kuiper belt, a ring of bodies beyond Neptune. It was the first Kuiper belt object to be discovered.
Neptune wobbles while it orbits, it is the furthest planet from the sun next to pluto. Neptune has a diameter of 49 500km and is a distance of 4 497 000 000km from the sun. It orbits the sun every 165 years at an average orbit speed of 5km/s.
