<div>2016-17 is our first year of operation at American Academy of Innovation (AAI). For our first year, we have 6-11 grades, with a maximum of 60 students per grade. We began the year with about 200 students, mostly in 6-8 grades.</div>
<div>Groundbreaking for the new building occurred in January 2016 and the construction company promised throughout that the building would be ready by the first week in August. Although is mostly was, because of delays of equipment and subcontractors, final details were still being finished up through the first few weeks of school. Lockers arrived in late October, and the science lab room was finished during the middle of November.</div>
<div>Knowing that we had an immediate need for computers, two chromebook carts with 26 devices each were ordered at the start of the school year. 27 laptops and a cart were also ordered. In early November, a community grant allowed one more chromebook cart to be purchased.</div>
<div>With the additional chromebook cart, we will have 78 chromebooks in three carts and 27 laptops by the end of first semester (Jan. 2017). We now have 220 students, so this is approximately a 1:2 computer to student ratio. We also have a functioning 3D printer, color laser copiers, and a scanner. Our slow Internet will be replaced by a Google Fiber line through the Utah Education Network, which will greatly enhance our ability to do projects of global scope.</div>
<div>With a 1:1 computer/student ratio and a dedicated Innovation Lab and makerspace, we will have the capability to work on STEM engineering projects related to global issues. We will add a complete video filming and editing bay that will allow my students to Skype, record, narrate, and compile videos on global issues for YouTube.</div>
