<div>Before appearing on the ballot, proposed constitutional amendments must be passed by a majority of both the State House and Senate in two successive legislative sessions. <div><b>Current situation. </b><a href="http://law.lis.virginia.gov/constitutionexpand/article10/">Article X, Section 6-A</a> of the Constitution of Virginia now requires the General Assembly to exempt from taxation the real property of any veteran with a 100 percent service-connected, permanent, and total disability as well as the real property of the surviving spouse of an eligible veteran. </div><div><br></div><div><b>What the amendment proposes. </b>This amendment would authorize the General Assembly to enact a law that would allow a locality to exempt from taxation the real property of the surviving spouse of <b>any law-enforcement officer, firefighter, search and rescue personnel, or emergency medical services personnel</b> who is killed in the line of duty. </div><div><br></div><div><b>What a "yes" vote means.</b></div><div>Yes, I DO want the legislature to be authorized to extend real property tax exemption to surviving spouses of those personnel listed above who are killed in the line of duty. </div><div><br></div><div><b>What a "no" vote means.</b></div><div>No, I DO NOT want the legislature to be authorized to extend real property tax exemption to surviving spouses of those personnel listed above who are killed in the line of duty. </div><div><br></div><div>For more information, see the <a href="http://www.elections.virginia.gov/election-law/proposed-constitutional-amendment-2016/index.html">Virginia Elections website</a>.</div>
