Extended Communication is required when students must produce communication that represents a set of connected ideas, not a single simple thought. Four Questions 1. Does the activity require extended communication? 2. Is the communiction multi-modal? 3. Does the activity require supportive evidence? 4. Are students required to design communication for a particular audience?
The activity involves a task with a challenge for the student. Students must develop a solution to a problem that is new to them or complete a task they may not have been instructed how to do. Or Design a complex product that meets a set of requirements. Key Questions 1. What does problem solving look like? 2. Are they real-world problems? 3. Are they innovative problems?
Students work together to discuss an issue, solve a problem, create a product. Key questions 1. What does working together look like? 2. Is the responsibility shared? 3. Is there a substantive decision? 4. Is the students' work interdependent?
Activities are long-term if students work on it for a substantive period of time. This cannot be said if it is done in one period of time. Key Questions 1. Is the activity long term? 2. Are students planning their own work? 3. Do the students have opportunity to revise work based on feedback?
