This is the keyboard membrane. This is placed under the keyboard and is made of rubber because it is soft, meaning you can get the buttons to work with little pressure. When it is pressed it activates the chip which lead to the functions and display working
The back and front casing of the calculator is made of a hard shatter proof plastic. This is to protect the inside of the calculator , making it last longer, and ensure that it won't break when dropped
Another reason the outer casing is made of hard plastic is so that the calculator lasts a long time without any wear. However, this is bad for the environment as it also means in it takes a long time for the material to biodegrade
This is the polarising filter film that goes on top of the LCD display, it converts the undefined light in the display into well defined light. It only allows light of certain polarisation pass through, blocking out other polarisations. PICTURE EXPLAINED: Reflective twisted nematic liquid crystal display. 1.Polarizing filter film with a vertical axis to polarize light as it enters. 2.Glass substrate with ITOelectrodes. The shapes of these electrodes will determine the shapes that will appear when the LCD is turned ON. Vertical ridges etched on the surface are smooth. 3.Twisted nematic liquid crystal. 4.Glass substrate with common electrode film (ITO) with horizontal ridges to line up with the horizontal filter. 5.Polarising filter film with a horizontal axis to block/pass light. 6.Reflective surface to send light back to viewer. (In a backlit LCD, this layer is replaced with a light source.)
an LCD display is used as it is more energy efficient and can be disposed of more safely than cathode ray tube (CRT) displays. Its low power consumption means that the calculator can be battery or even solar powered
This is a foam tape which lies beneath the display to prevent it from cracking. It absorbs the pressure on the screen preventing breakage. This is similar to a trampoline which absorbs the energy from your fall and uses it to spring you back up without harm
These buttons are made of Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (also known as abs). However, many calculators use silicone buttons, but because they are so soft, they need to be pressed down more, which is why, I believe these buttons are more efficient. These buttons are also better as they are far more long lasting, they cannot tear or wear down.
These are the keyboard sensors, the surrounding is made of hard plastic with indentations forms the sensors, this means that the sensor is only touched by the button and nothing else. The sensors are made of a conductive metal in ordee to conduct the electric signals<br>
This is the processing unit, it is made of copper wires and is covered in a fine layer of plastic. This is basically the brain of the calculator. All the processes are lead to here and completed here and then shown on the display.
This calculator is battery powered, however new calculators are generally solar powered as it means they can last longer without energy replacements and in the long term cost less as you don't need any batteries. The solar panels are made of silicone cells and absorb sunlight and convert it into electricity. The batteries are not efficiently biodegradable so the solar panel is a better option
the nails are made out of stainless steel so that they don't rust. This means that the shape stays the same, meaning easy un/re screwing
