Pompeii was a very busy place before the eruption. Some call it the "Ancient Las Vegas".
The Forum was the economic, religious, and political center of Pompeii.
Mount Vesuvius erupted and destroyed Pompeii in 79 AD.
Stepping stones were placed in the streets because sewage flowed through. Carts etched grooves in the stones over many years.
Fun Fact: The eruption of Mount Vesuvius on August 24 was said to have lasted over 24 hours.
Info: Giuseppe Fiorelli realized that the gaps located in the layers of ash where left by the decomposed bodies of those who where killed by the explosion in Pompeii. He pumped plaster into the holes and produced casts of the citizens. Women, men, children, and animals were found.
Fun Fact: One day after the religious festival to Vulcan, the eruption took place. Vulcan is the Roman god of fire.
Info: Pompeii had public heated bath houses that sometimes included pools and gymnasiums. The rooms were heated by running warm water through the cavities in the walls.<br /><br />
