The London Blitz was a strategic change on Adolf Hitler's part in his plan to subdue Great Britain. It was his attempt to destroy London and demoralize the population by attacking civilians and essentially non-military targets.
'Blitz. Our London Docks' Charles Pears (1873-1958). This painting depicts the London Blitz that took place in 1940-1941.
The London Blitz began on the afternoon of September 7, 1940, which was the beginning of a period of intense bombing of London for 57 consecutive days.
The Blitz as a whole lasted roughly nine months of Hitler targeting London and other large cities of Great Britain. In the worst single incident, 450 were killed when a bomb destroyed a school being used as an air raid shelter.
At around 4:00 PM, 348 German bombers escorted by 617 fighters blasted London until 6:00 PM. Two hours later, guided by the fires set by the first assault, a second group of raiders commenced another attack that lasted until 4:30 the following morning.
The Blitz ended on May 11, 1941 when Hitler called off the raids in order to move his bombers east in preparation for Germany's invasion of Russia.
