The Learning Cycle begins by identifying what standards will be taught and assessed in depth. These can be Common Core for ELA or Math or other standards written by a state. In each standard identify the verb or the behavior you want students to exhibit. There are several designations of learning verbs which include Bloom's Taxonomy and Webb's Depth of Knowledge. Then identify the noun or how students will demonstrate their learning. Standards do not come from textbooks Learning targets are written from the standards known as "I can" statements. The learning targets break down the standard into smaller chunks of learning. This helps scaffold learning for students. Both formative and summative assessments are based off of standards and subsequent learning targets.
Preassessment This helps a teacher determine to what degree students already know a particular topic and then develop differentiation strategies to personalize. Preassessment is done well before that start of a new unit so the teacher has adequate time to plan high quality instruction. totallytremendousteachers.wikispaces.com TotallyTremendousTeachers - The Importance of Pre-Assessment and Formative Assessment
The cycle of learning that helps students attain mastery of standards and learning targets. Essential to this is formative assessment feedback loop.
Learning events are the intentional and differentiated experiences you plan for students. As the educator, you determine how many events are needed between instruction and formative assessment. Learning events should be varied to keep student interest yet help them achieve the verb in the learning target(s) associated with a lesson or series of lessons.
Formative assessment loop After giving a formative assessment, it's time to analyze the data to determine which students have gained mastery of a learning target. For students who have not attained mastery, the teacher offers intervention. The intervention could be descriptive feedback that helps to clarify learning. It could be a partial re-learning experience over just the items the student missed. Or, it could be a complete re-learning experience.
Formative assessment This is the quintessential tool in the educators tool belt. The results of these short assessments help the educator make informed decisions about teaching and learning. The data helps teachers determine which students have attained mastery and which have not. For students who have mastered the learning targets, they can be given enrichment activities. For those who have not mastered the learning targets, the teacher offers descriptive feedback so students are clear on what they didn't understand and why.

After intervention and enrichment have taken place, it's time to move on to the next learning event(s).
The next formative assessment is given, data is collected, and the teacher provides intervention and enrichment.
The formative assessment feedback loop connects teacher with students to insure they understand whether or not they have mastered the learning targets.
