The immigrants were excited to form a new life in the country they were moving to. Their expectations were to have family, a good job, etc.

Immigrants were melancholic because they were not in their country, without most of their family: they were alone, discriminated and segregated. Furthermore, they didn’t know the traditions of their new country, which made them look ridiculous.

Many immigrants, such as the protagonist of the movie we saw in class, had family in USA. Therefore, settling down there was much easier for them.

Most immigrants didn't have a degree or a formal profession. Therefore, they did the work natives who had a profession didn't. A clear example were the women who got into prostitution in order to get some money. All in all, what they was selling their bodies.
s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com

This picture represents the natives who received the immigrants, who decided whether if the they were allowed to stay or not. What they did was asking about the immigrants’ origin, civil status, job, low morals in order to decide how “useful” they would be. If they weren't "useful" enough, they were deported. Natives were more likely to let women enter if they had low morals in order to take advantage of them.

Moreover, much of the people didn't like them at all and made fun and segregated them. However, others thought they were quite useful.
s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com
