Moving from passive to active learning is a stated priority in national education strategies from Finland to Singapore, from Brazil to Japan \u2014 but how to combine active learning and digital skills development in a meaningful way?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ThingLink originates from Finland, where phenomenon-based learning is embedded in the national curriculum. Supporting genuine inquiry in real-world environments has been a core design philosophy behind our product from the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The core idea is simple: instead of students receiving information and learning materials, they create them. When a student investigates a local ecosystem, a historical site, or a scientific process and documents it with a tool like ThingLink, the research is clear that learning outcomes improve. Creation demands engagement with the subject in a way that consumption never can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This maps to inquiry and phenomenon-based approaches in three specific ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, students must observe and document a real phenomenon or artefact before they can create an interactive poster or presentation about it. A multimodal documenting tool demands engagement with the subject instead of just recalling facts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Second, designing branched simulation experiences lets students map decision trees and cause-and-effect sequences, making their thinking about a phenomenon visible and structured in a way that a written answer simply cannot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Third, when student projects are shared with peers and teachers, the work becomes an artefact for discussion, critique and collaborative inquiry instead of just an assignment to be submitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Digital skills as a by-product of meaningful engagement<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many national strategies treat digital literacy as a separate subject to be taught. ThingLink embeds digital skill-building into the act of learning itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When a student documents a project with ThingLink, they are applying digital tools purposefully: capturing images, structuring information, writing and recording explanations, and designing a user experience with a range of interactivity. They are not learning about technology in the abstract, but using it to do something meaningful. This develops genuine digital competence far more effectively than dedicated ICT lessons alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For governments pursuing digital economy strategies, this matters. A student who has spent three years creating original digital experiences has built a transferable skill set that extends well beyond any single platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal of any good learning tool is to invite students to engage, explore, identify, classify, analyse, explain, reflect or plan \u2014 ideally, in a flow that combines all of these. AI can assist with many or all of the tasks, but the cognitive work of organising your own observations in real-life environments, constructing your own argument, and presenting your own understanding to others are core skills that matter more than ever.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students who will use AI most effectively are the ones who spent years engaging with and observing their environment, organising their own observations into coherent explanations, building their own arguments from evidence, and presenting their thinking to a real audience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The capacity to engage meaningfully with AI is not a technical skill.
