Since the Japanese refused to surrender after 4 years of war, President Harry Truman made the difficult decision to drop the atomic bombs. The refusal of a demand for unconditional surrender made on Japan would result in total destruction. The Japanese rejected the demand which eventually leads to the bomb droppings.
The first atomic bomb, dropped by the U.S. "Enola Gay," was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945. 70,000 people instantly died. Even after just a few months and years, about 100,000 more people died from radiation and burns. acepilots.com

Some people believe that Truman's decision was "barbaric" and would lead to future foreign problems. The U.S. was also accused for being racist since that would never be used against whites. The bombs are said to have ended World War II and started the Cold War.
Additionally, Truman knew that if they didn't follow through with the dropping of the bomb that there would possibly be no surrender. Staying in the war was not an option for the president.
