Chatterton, firefighter Robert Witham, and probationary firefighter Carissa Campbell force their way into 197 Forward Ave. Meanwhile, Taylor and Barrett climb back up the aerial ladder and enter 193 Forward Ave. through the fourth-storey window. Ladder 11’s operator climbs to the top of the ladder to act as a “beacon” for them, using a spotlight and his voice.

A third alarm is declared.

Barrett and Taylor return to their entry point, but their ladder has been moved. Ladder 11 is “locked out” and temporarily useless. Barrett jumps out the window and lands on a porch roof two levels below; he jams his foot into the eavestrough to stop his fall. Taylor follows, but becomes entangled in the drapes and tumbles out head-first. Barrett grabs him and stops him from tumbling off the roof.

A breakdown in radio communications occurs as static begins to interfere with transmissions. The heat of the fire has melted the wire insulation on Witham’s radio, creating an open microphone.
Dispatch reports receiving a “man down” alarm. The heat of the fire has also melted the insulation on Chatterton’s radio, triggering the alarm. With heat and smoke offering no other escape, Chatterton leads his team to the side window of 197 Forward Ave. He waits as his two crew members, Witham and Campbell, jump out the fourth-storey window. The operator of Ladder 11, believing that it is Taylor and Barrett at the side window, descends to move his ladder into place to help them. He is ordered to rotate the ladder to the side of the house.

Two firefighters move Campbell away from the building as Witham hangs from the window sill, about to drop. Chatterton waits until Witham has cleared the landing area before he, too, jumps out of the window. Ladder 11 does not respond to the controls as its operator tries to move it into place.
